How to Price Your Art

Bring your price list, or your last 10 works. Live with me, you'll build a price structure you can explain out loud, line your prices up across your studio, galleries and online, and plan your next raise. You'll leave with a price sheet you can stand behind.

What you'll leave knowing

Seven parts of pricing your art, worked on your own pieces, not in theory.

  1. A pricing formula you can say in one sentencePrice by size or by medium, with your hours and materials as a floor check, not the price itself.
  2. Comparables that actually compareHow to find your pricing neighborhood: artists at your stage, showing in places like yours, and how to read what they charge.
  3. When and how to raise your pricesThe moments that earn a raise, how big a step to take, and why a published price never goes down.
  4. One price in the studio, the gallery and onlineWhy your retail price stays the same everywhere, how a gallery's commission comes out of it, and why a commissioned piece never comes in under your list.
  5. Editions and printsWhere they sit under your originals, so a print never undercuts the work it comes from.
  6. Talking price with collectorsSay the number, then pause. Plus a ready answer when a collector asks, "Will it go up in value?"
  7. Discounts and payment plansDecide your rules before anyone asks, so you're never making them up in the moment.

Moriah Alise

I started Dear Glory in 2020 because the art world I was working in didn't have anyone naming it plainly: how careers actually get built, and how rooms actually open.

My day job, before and alongside all of this, is being an art-world strategist. I work with artists, galleries and institutions across the country on the slow, durable work of building careers. I've hosted GloryLand in Houston, I teach GloryLab for the Glory Collective, and I built the Exhibition Planning Workbook.

Questions

What if I can't make it live?
The replay comes with your seat. It lands in your inbox on Friday, Nov 20, with the worksheet.
What time is that for me?
7:30 PM Central on Thursday, Nov 19. That's 8:30 Eastern, 5:30 Pacific, and 1:30 AM Friday in London. It's all on Zoom, so you can join from anywhere.
How do I get the Zoom link?
By email, right after checkout, along with your Stripe receipt. You'll get a reminder the day before and an hour before. Not there in 10 minutes? Check your spam folder, then write hello@dearglory.com with the email you used at checkout.
Do I need to be selling already?
No. If you haven't sold yet, you'll leave with your first price sheet and the sentence that backs it up. If you have, we'll line up what you've already asked.
I'm in the Glory Collective. How do I get in?
Building Glory and Mastering Glory members are in free. It is your GloryLab night, so use your usual link and watch your member email for the Zoom details. Studio members get the member price in the member email. Look for it before you check out here.
What if I can't come after all?
Workshop seats are final, like all Dear Glory event tickets. If something comes up, you can transfer your seat to another artist up to 24 hours before, or ask at least 7 days before and we'll move what you paid to a credit toward any Dear Glory event in the next 12 months. If we cancel, you get a full refund. Read the full refund policy.
Is this financial advice?
No. It's the business side of an art career, not legal, tax or financial advice.
Want the whole picture?

Pricing is one of six parts of an art career. If you want me to look at all six from your real work and sales, and write your next two years around them, that's the Career Audit + 2-Year Plan.
